Program

STARBASE is more than a fieldtrip. It's an interactive experience.

Students experiment

We inspire creativity and hands-on learning with features you won't find in any other classroom. This learning takes place in a location students really want to come to where they will experience climbing on a Black Hawk Helicopter, touring a KC-135 Refueling Aircraft, Engine Shops and HET Vehicles.Kansas STARBASE students test concepts

Powerful activities like:

  • rocket launches,
  • EV3 Robotics,
  • and 3D CAD design

let students engage with content in interactive ways, find new interests, and access the world of STEM like never before.

Using active learning instructional strategies, students become directly involved in the educational process which maximizes their understanding and learning. Hands-on experiments have students:

  • launching Alka-seltzer rockets,
  • navigating with GPS devices,
  • analyzing chemicals,
  • soaring through the atmosphere with flight simulator,
  • and solving engineering feats using the EDP process.

STARBASE Profiles

Major General Lee Tafanelli

The relationship between the Kansas National Guard and DoD STARBASE is a remarkable one. We are proud to help DoD STARBASE provide hours of hands-on learning for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders to apply science, technology, engineering and math concepts, or STEM to daily life. More than 200 school districts from 53 counties have participated in the Kansas DoD STARBASE program since 1993. With this amazing youth program, we have reached more than 60,000 students in Kansas.
